Annual Thankful Report

Another year has gone by and suddenly it is time for the annual Thankful Report. I started the practice three years ago, as a way to celebrate the publishing of my first novel, eHuman Dawn, released on 11/26/13. So much has happened since then and it's always interesting to re-read the previous year's report and see what happened and take stock of where I'm going.

2017 was a big year for me as a writer. I decided to leave my agent and publisher behind, taking back the rights to the eHuman series. The reasons for this were many, and some day maybe I'll share them, but essentially I knew it was time to set out on my own and seek new representation, as well as a new publisher. And since I had a new project, I went for it.

As a result, I didn't finish the eHuman trilogy. Instead, I rewrote the first book and will spend the next year doing the same to the second one. I want to give the entire series a reboot with my signature on it. In addition, there are many new developments in technology and the story will benefit from incorporating what has been discovered.

I spent most of the year querying agents for my Egyptian trilogy and man, that was excruciating. The process took hours and hours and hours. In exchange for my efforts, I received 56 rejections. Well, 57 actually, since one more came in yesterday that I'd sent out four months ago and completely forgotten about. There is nothing worse than this phase of writing and to all of you going through it, my heart is with you. We suffer together as fools, but don't give up. I know everyone says that, but after my 56th rejection in August, I was ready to quit, never to pitch again. But for some reason I got the notion to get on Twitter and look at what agents were asking for. It was #MSWL time and I thought maybe, just maybe?

Turns it wasn't #MSWL that would be the ticket to publication, but #pitmad, short for Pitch Madness. To participate, I had to come up with two, 140 character pitches for the story about the last native Pharaoh of Egypt. On 9/5/17 and editor from a small publisher asked to see the first three chapters. I checked out her company and decided to share. A week later, she asked for the whole manuscript. I was elated, only two agents in 56 had even asked for partials, so to share the entire story was a thrill.

Then, on October 1, 2017, I got an offer for my book. I sent them the rest of the trilogy and by the end of the month the entire trilogy was under contract.

Somehow, even without an agent, I still get to begin the great work of creating a beautiful story with an editor by my side. We've just begun round one and while she had a ton of suggestions, I couldn't be happier. This is what I wanted--an editor who loves my story and has an eye for creating beautiful literature. It won't be easy, but I'm grateful that 2018 will be the year of polishing, beautifying, and improving evermore as a writer.

As I edit the novels for publication, I'll be taking a break from social media for the world of Facebook and Twitter have fallen into a place of discord and it distracts me from the beauty and awe of the world. I do not think artists can create truth and goodness unless we're open and vulnerable. To be in that space requires trust and social media at the moment only serves to divide. Besides, I need to use that time to write.

There will be posts from time to time, mostly pictures of my family and the beauty of life on Earth, or articles about cool technology, and I'll still write for Medium.

I hope to have a new novel for you next summer...and for that I am incredibly grateful.

A Thanksgiving Trinity

I love the number three, which also includes the various multiples of three. Six is the number of the honeybee. Nine is three times three, what could be better? Stories come to me as trilogies, trinities, trifold, triplets…

This year I celebrate my third anniversary as a published writer. On November 26, 2013, eHuman Dawn was published in Kindle form by Story Merchant Books. This was also when I wrote my first blog on technology and consciousness titled, "Somebody's Watching Me." It appears that while everything has changed in the world, some important issues remain the same, and the American civilian surveillance/Snowden saga is still unresolved. 

But my life as a writer started six years ago, when I decided to leave my job and use the time I had been gifted to pursue my lifelong dream of writing. Since then I have written and published a sequel, eHuman Deception and both are now available in paperback, Kindle and in book stores! In addition, I re-edited eHuman Dawn to remove all the various typos as well as began work on the screenplay adaption. Lastly, I just completed a brand new trilogy, traveling back in time to the Great Egyptian Revolt of 200 B.C. to tell a story that Greek historians literally chiseled from history, one monument at a time, in order to hide the fact that native Egypt almost ripped control from the Ptolemy Empire. Researching and writing this saga was one of the best experiences of my life.

2016 was quite a year for unexpected plot twists. It began with the passing of David Bowie, saw the Cubs win the World Series and ended with Donald Trump as our president-elect. It feels like all the rules of life have vanished and now anything is possible. I’m filled with both horror and elation in such a world. Perhaps writers are well suited to the destiny of uncertainty. For six years I’ve been chasing a dream that most would call impossible. But is it? Six years ago I had an idea about a dystopian world where everything is a device on the network, including humanity, yet I had no concept yet of Ankhmakis, the last native Pharaoh of Egypt, nor his story. I stumbled upon it while researching something else and suddenly I found myself in a whole new world. The imagination works that way—you never really know where the muse will take you next.

There are many people who will try to sell you a straight path to publication, to writing that best-selling novel. My journey has told me otherwise. From the plotline to the acquisitions editor, and every step in between, the path of storytelling is one of twists and turns, moments of inspiration, and weeks of nothing. Several rejections followed by a chance meeting at a conference or a friend who mentions your work to a colleague who happens to have a list of editors seeking historical fiction. Hell, last September, I sat down at the computer with every intention of writing the final eHuman book when Pharaoh Ankhmakis demanded I tell his story instead. What followed was a year of work totally unplanned, but wholly worthwhile.

Nothing in life is linear and in a world where the Cubs can win the World Series and a Twitter troll can win the presidency, honestly, I think anything goes. That said, I do have a plan for the next year, and of course it is threefold. First, I hope to finish the screenplay for eHuman Dawn and actively pursue selling it. Second I will finish eHuman Deliverance, the last in that Trilogy. And lastly, I will to sell the Egyptian Trilogy to a major publishing house. If you know any agents or acquisitions editors looking for historical fantasy/fiction/romance, send them my way. I’d be eternally grateful.

Mostly I’m thankful for the life I’ve been given. Living as a storyteller is vulnerable but it is also perfect. I wouldn’t want to spend my days any other way. To those of you who have helped me on my journey, especially my cheerleaders (specifically my dear friend Regan and my husband), editor (the great Stephanie Diaz who helped me shape the Egyptian Revolt into three solid novels) and of course every single reader, I send you thanks and gratitude. Without you, my stories would just be for me. You’re the reason I’ve been a published author for three years and I’m looking forward to sharing my stories with you for at least thirty more. 

Gratitude—The Secret of Success

November 26^th is the anniversary of my official life as a published writer. It’s been two years since eHuman Dawn found a place on  the Amazon virtual bookshelf and I honestly must say that I have a wonderful life. No, I’m not famous and I’m certainly not able to feed myself on my writing, however it feels like everything else in life is coming together to make it possible for me to do what I love with the time I have.

It isn’t just the writing, I also spend my days raising my sons, playing music, teaching children to dance, knitting, spinning, speaking at Brighter Brains events, blogging, reading up on technology and science and of course—writing novels!

We live in some amazing times. Yes, there are risks and threats, but I’ve found that in spite of all the darkness that surrounds me, or the impossibilities of my dreams, there’s one sure way to lift myself from hopelessness and into possibility—a thankful heart. There are entire sections of the library devoted to self-help and techniques for success, but I think gratitude is really the easiest way to feel satisfied with life, which to me is the definition of success.

As such, in my annual Thanksgiving Blog, I shall do just that—GIVE THANKS!!!!

There are many people to thank for my wonderful life, but first and foremost, I thank my husband. He’s the one who supported me first in this endeavor. It all began when I decided to leave my software job to stay home and raise the kids. He never once said we couldn’t afford it or that I was wrong to throw away my career. Instead he believed that I knew best what was in my heart and supported me. Fast forward to the past two years and he’s still encouraging me to follow my heart by supporting my even crazier decision to become a novelist. If raising kids was tricky, writing stories and trying to get people to read them is insane! The rest of my family is supportive as well, but my husband is the best cheerleader I have.

I’m also grateful for my Airbnb business, which has allowed me to make money to support my writing while having the time to actually write. Even two years ago, when I posted my first blog, I had no idea that within a year I’d have a steady income source from my own home. Technology is truly the great equalizer and while many mistrust the “sharing economy,” as an artist, I love the stability it provides as I invest in my creative career.

And of course, I want to thank the readers. Perhaps you only read my blog, or my work posted on IEET. Maybe you’re a follower on Twitter or a friend who loyally reads my work. No matter what level your interest is, I’m glad you found me and I want to hear from you. Honestly, dialogue is the key to innovation, so let’s get connected on Twitter, Reddit, Facebook, or Goodreads. I think there’s a lot a community of readers can do for the world.

Thank You For A Great First Year!

It’s Thanksgiving Day here in the US of A, and I’m celebrating by spending the day with my family and giving thanks for my wonderful life. One of the greatest blessings of the past year has been to publish my first novel, eHuman Dawn, with Story Merchant books. Looking back, I can’t believe it’s been one year since I began my official journey as a published author.

Yes, it's true, on November 26, 2013, eHuman Dawn was first published as an eBook on Amazon.

TIME TO CELEBRATE!!! For the next week, in gratitude for all that’s happened and to honor this creative project, eHuman Dawn is FREE on the Kindle. That means if you haven’t read it yet, now is the time. Download and read it. Share it with others. And if you feel so inclined, write a review on Amazon. All of these things keeps the dream alive.

In the year since eHuman Dawn was first published, I’ve launched a blog, a Twitter and Facebook account, written the sequel, presented at Bay Area transhumanist conferences sponsored by the Brighter Brains Institute, joined the advisory board of the Lifeboat Foundation, made several new friends and completed a third novel that has absolutely nothing to do with eHumanity.

I’m not a best selling author yet, but the numbers are climbing. I’d say it’s been a very, very good start, and I want to thank everyone who’s supported me, whether as a reader, a reviewer, online in discussion or at the conferences. All endeavors in life take a village, and a writing career is certainly better when shared with others.

What’s on the agenda for the next year? Well, expect to see more blogging and speaking. I’ve joined the Brighter Brains speaker hub and am available to speak at technical conferences of a variety of topics. Check out my page on their site and share with those who might be interested.

I’ll also be publishing a short story in an upcoming anthology to be published by the Lifeboat Foundation and yes, it will take place in the eHuman world.

Most excitingly, the sequel to eHuman Dawn will hopefully be ready for publication in the late winter/early spring!! I’m also going to begin work on the screenplay for both novels, in hopes of bringing the true dream to life…The eHuman Trilogy on the big screen. Yes, I said trilogy, which means I’ll also begin writing the third and final installment.

And if there’s any time left, perhaps I can get my agent interested in that mysterious novel that has nothing to do with eHumanity one bit. Anything is possible.

So thanks again for all your support. This has been a great start and I owe it all to you. Did I mention eHuman Dawn is FREE on the Kindle until 12/01??? Just want to be sure you saw that.
